Linda Evangelista (born May 10, 1965) is a Canadian model who helped to define the term 'supermodel' in the 1980s.
Evangelista is a legend in the modelling business, having been on over 700 magazine covers around the world.
Linda Evangelista is from St. Catharines, Ontario, just north of Niagara Falls. She is of Italian parentage, and her father worked for General Motors.
As a tween, Linda attended a finishing school, where, aside from learning how to balance books on her head, she was advised to try modelling.
This led Linda to model locally, and then she entered the Miss Teen Niagara beauty pageant in 1981. This led to Evangelista being signed by Elite Model Management. A bad experience in Japan caused her to give up modelling for a couple of years, but then she resumed the profession in 1984.

Linda is famous for a lot of things, and trying to cherry-pick out the most interesting things that she has done is difficult. She is famous for a quote that she gave in the October 1990 issue of Vogue, where Evangelista dismissively said about supermodels, "We don't wake up for less than $10,000 a day." That has become a kind of catchphrase for top models, with variants such as "I don't get out of bed for less than $10,000" and so on.

She has worked throughout her career with the top photographers such as Steven Meisel, Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh and Karl Lagerfeld - in fact, working with Evangelista is one of the ways they become known as the best in the business. So, the relationships have been mutually beneficial to all concerned.
As a top supermodel, Linda did a lot to advance the conditions for all models. She demanded higher pay and got it, which raised rates throughout the industry. She also did some high-profile public service ads to raise awareness about AIDS as part of a broader sales campaign. The president of fashion brand Kenar, Kenneth Zimmerman, said of her after one such billboard promotion in Times Square:
"She has increased our sales dramatically. Linda was our Michael Jordan. We chose her because we wanted a star, and of the four or five star models, she is number one."
Linda remains a top model to this day, and continues to get covers. In fact, Evangelista is legendary in part due to the number of covers that she has snagged, particularly on Vogue Italia.

For instance, Linda was on the Harper's Bazaar cover for September 2014, "Harper's biggest ever." That wasn't even her only top cover that month, also being on the cover of Vogue Japan.
Linda Evangelista, now in her 50s, remains active in the modelling business, though she has cut down on her public appearances and sightings of her make the news. Her most recent project as of this writing is as the creative director of new skincare company Erasa, which sells anti-aging creams such as Erasa XEP-30. Linda Evangelista is signed to DNA Model Management in New York and Models 1 in London.
Linda Evangelista has a son, Augustin James, with French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault.
