Karen happened upon modelling by noticing an ad in the paper by Elite Model Management.
Karen entered and won, placing second in the finals. That sent her off on the runways, representing Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, Christian Lacroix, Versace, and Giorgio Armani on the runway. She starred in a notable series of Guess ads.
Karen also started getting covers, such as Vogue, and signed with Victoria's Secret in 1992.

Karen graced the cover of Top Model and made two appearance in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 1997 and 1998. She also tried acting and music.
After the peak of her fame, Karen had some personal issues. She appeared on a French interview show, but made such bizarre allegations about being raped by practically everyone she had ever known, including her own father, that the show never aired.
Many people found the claims to be, how shall we put this, more suited for a private environment than a public forum. However, Karen continued making the allegations. Obviously, this was a very sensitive situation which had to be addressed by someone close to Karen.
Karen's sister Saskia acted. Saskia had Karen Mulder committed for five months to work out her issues. However, it did not help. Karen later tried to commit suicide. She survived, but obviously it was a cry for help.
Since then, Karen has resumed her career, but it is unclear if she is completely better.
Since then, Karen has not made the news for similar incidents, so perhaps her treatment worked.
In any event, Karen has had a spectacular career and will always be remembered as one of Victoria's Secret's top models.
