Rihanna Knows How to Rock Leather
Rihanna, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on 20 February 1988, has been a superstar for many years. Her appearance at the 2008 American Music Awards stands out in the annals of pop stardom, when she wore an outrageous leather outfit that set social media abuzz. That was just the beginning, though.
Rihanna is from Saint Michael, Barbados. Growing up in Bridgetown, she made her move into professional music by the age of 15. Record producer Evan Rogers discovered her.
Rihanna was a member of a local group that she and some friends had formed. However, Rogers was only focused on Rihanna.
Def Jam Records liked her demo. More specifically, rapper Jay Z - who ran the company - liked it. That's really all you need. Sounds easy, right?
Rihanna was signed immediately - she stayed in the office until the contracts were ready at 3 a.m. An album was prepared immediately. The first single was "Pon de Replay," a huge international hit.
The album, "Music of the Sun," came out a few months later, in August 2005. It also was a huge hit, selling over two million copies around the world.
Rihanna's next album was "A Girl Like Me" in April 2006. It also was a huge success, being certified Platinum by the RIAA in the United States.

Rihanna's third studio album was "Good Girl Gone Bad." Released in May 2007, it also was successful and everybody seemed to love it. The lead single was "Umbrella," which was No. 1 in the UK for ten consecutive weeks.

Around this time, Rihanna got into the tabloids due to issues with then-boyfriend Chris Brown. The paparazzi captured shots of Rihanna sporting some bruises. However, Rihanna got through it and released "Rated R." Naturally, it was another big success. Six singles came off the album, including "Rude Boy," a US No. 1 hit for six weeks.
"Loud" was Rihanna's next album. "Only Girl (In the World)" was another smash single, hitting No. 1 around the world, as did "What's My Name?" and "S&M" with Britney Spears. By this point, Rihanna had 10 number one singles.

"Talk Talk Talk" came along in November 2011, then "Unapologetic" in November 2012. It was her last album with Def Jam, as Rihanna signed with Roc Nation.
"Home" came along in March 2015. It was based on an animated film in which she voiced a character. After that, single "FourFiveSeconds" with Kanye West and Paul McCartney was another huge success.
Rihanna has developed an acting career along the way, too.
She starred in hit film "Battleship," and also snagged the recurring role of Marion Crane in television series "Bates Motel."
The sky's the limit now for Rihanna's acting career. She is an established film star and has many projects in the pipeline. "Ocean's Eight" is a big project, an all-female version of the "Ocean's Eleven" heist films.
Time Magazine included Rihanna in its list of 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2012.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) gave Rihanna the Fashion Icon lifetime achievement award in 2014.
February 22, 2008 was "Rihanna Day" in Barbados. It is celebrated every day.
So far, Rihanna has 14 number one singles in the US and has sold over 18 million singles and six million albums in the UK. She is an international superstar with no limit to her potential.
