Anne Jacqueline Hathaway (born November 12, 1982) is one of the top female stars of the 21st Century.
She won an Oscar as Fantine in Tom Hooper's "Les Misérables" (2012). Academy Awards are great and fantastic and cool, but most people actually remember Anne from when she starred as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight Rises" (2012).
Long before those roles, though, she was famous for playing Mia Thermopolis in the Disney film "The Princess Diaries" (2001) and in its 2004 sequel. Let's learn a bit more about the delightful Anne Hathaway.
Anne is a Brooklyn girl, having been born there to a lawyer, Gerald, and a former actress, Kathleen Ann.
Anne is of Irish, French, English and German descent.
Anne realized that she wanted to become an actress at a young age and attended a number of drama schools, as well as performing with the chorus.
Anne is often compared to Judy Garland and Audrey Hepburn.
Anne's big break was being cast in the Fox television series "Get Real." It didn't last long, but it got her noticed.
That led to a role in a Disney film, "The Other Side of Heaven" (2001).
Even before that, though, she had won the role in "Princess Diaries," the first time Anne Hathaway came to mass attention.
"Princess Diaries" was based on a Meg Cabot novel written in 2000.
Anne got a chance to act with Julie Andrews in The Princess Diaries, another actress with whom she is sometimes compared.
"The Princess Diaries" was a huge success, grossing $165 million, and led to the sequel a few years later.
There is no question that "The Princess Diaries" ignited Anne's career.

Anne, though, doesn't just do prestige productions. She took a daring role in independent film "Havoc," in which she had some steamy scenes.
Another controversial film that Anne appeared in was "Brokeback Mountain." Unlike "Havoc," which wasn't even released in the US, Brokeback Mountain was a huge commercial success.
Another major success for Hathaway was "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006) with Meryl Streep.
Anne became the face of Lancôme fragrance Magnifique.
Another major hit for Anne was Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" (2010), in which she portrayed the White Queen.
Anne did the voice of Jewel in the Blue Sky Studios film "Rio" and its sequel.
Hathaway had a big year in 2012 with her two huge film successes, "Les Misérables" and "The Dark Knight Rises."
In addition to her well-received acting performance in Le Miz, Anne's performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" hit the Billboard singles charts, reaching No. 69 on the Hot 100.
Anne has had an interesting personal life. She dated Raffaello Follieri, an Italian real estate investor/financier, which led to a lot of problems for Anne. He had a number of legal issues, and they broke up after the police investigated the couple. Follieri wound up in prison, but Anne sailed serenely on.
After that, Hathay married actor Adam Shulman on 29 September 2012.
Anne works with charities such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Anne was a vegetarian at one point, but ultimately gave it up.
